Abstract: LAGUIDAO, JOSHUA EMMANUELLE, TORRENTE, ALWIE A., HARRY, UNIKUTELLE LIBBY. Unraveling Prenatal Experiences of Incarcerated Women Ages 18 to 35 in Correctional Institution for Women. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Cavite State University-Main Campus, Indang Cavite Philippines. May 2017. Adviser: Nenita B. Panaligan RN, MAN. This study was conducted to unravel the prenatal experiences of Incarcerated Women ages 23 to 35 in the Correctional Institution for Women specifically to discuss: the needs, struggles and conflicts encountered during the prenatal stage. This study was conducted in the Correctional Institution for Women in Barangay Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City, Manila. This Institution was chosen by the researchers, because of the increase percentage of criteria placed were met, specifically: age twenty-three to thirty-five female had been detained pregnant four years prior to the inception of the study, had given birth inside the premises of apprehension of the law and is the center of women prisoners in the Philippines. It was identified using a Purposive or Judgmental Sampling technique. Purposive or Judgmental sampling, wherein the researchers handpicked the subjects who are deemed that is typical to the population under the scope and criteria, this will represent each type of the desired characteristics to best serve the purpose of the study. This is utilized to meet the eligible criteria of the researchers. The researchers have chosen ten study participants from the typical population meeting the said criterions: comprising of five women in medium security and five from the maximum security, with a total of ten chosen participants. The remarkable themes were met from the data gathered from the answers out of six participants meeting the saturation point of the study. Guide Questions were made and was checked by the experts in their field of specialization. This was used in the serni structured personal interview rendered for three visits. The questionnaire was divided into two major parts, the first part states the demographical and bio physiological data and the pertinent information of the participant. The second part is the three major guide questions asked to the participants to unravel the in-depth prenatal experiences. The mean age of the study participants is 30 years. All the participants were already pregnant as at the time of arrest and majority of them (n=5) have given birth while still in jail, while one of the participants (n=l) was still pregnant as at the time of interview. The women were qualified as study participants because they have already experienced the process of pregnancy behind bars and were able to describe their various experiences through semi structured personal interview. The data gathered showed that there were similar patterns of care and treatment rendered on the participants of the study. In terms of care and treatment, Statistically, it shows that , n=5 receives the same treatment such as: transferring from the regular carceral spaces with the regular inmates to the mother's ward near the infirmary if proven pregnant after several laboratory and diagnostic examinations fulfilled inside the infirmary or in the affiliated hospital, Rizal Medical Center, received same treatment such as close observation, supplementation of multivitamins, ferrous sulfate and folic acid and prenatal check-ups once every month while n=l does not received the following treatments with the following reasons: nurses/doctor's attitude and personality due to their workload as well as the therapeutic and interpersonal relationship of the patients and nurses inside the mothers ward and infirmary. The themes discovered were: In terms of Prenatal Needs: Physiological Needs, Nutritional Needs, Health Needs and Emotional Needs, in terms of Prenatal conflicts: Safety and Security and Support System and lastly, the prenatal struggles were identified namely: Loss of identity, Absence of family, Guilt and shame, Emotional stress and Poor relationship. The themes formulated were under the needs, conflicts, and struggles of the chosen participants of the study. The result shows that all the themes identified greatly affect the experiences of the six incarcerated women. Primarily, their psychological perspective contributes the greatest part of their experiences inside the correctional. They compared their needs specifically physiological, health, nutritional and emotional needs from their outside experiences to their current situation. This makes them in need and in struggle conflicting the deviations they experience. However, it reveals that the correctional institution fills the gap between their needs, struggles and conflicts to mediate and further resolve the problems.

The mean age of the study participants is 30 years.
