Abstract: DELOS SANTOS, CYRUS R., ROM, MAYHBEL G. Smoking Behavior and Sports Participation of College Students in Cavite State University — Main Campus. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Sports and Recreational Management. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. October 2009. Adviser: Mr. Victor F. Piores. A study was conducted to determine the smoking behavior and sports participation of college students in Cavite State University — Main Campus. Specifically, the study described the demographic profile of college students in CvSU-Main Campus; determined the level of sports participation of college students; identified the types of sports that college students participated in; determined their smoking behavior; identified their major reasons for smoking; determined the relationship between the smoking behavior of college students and their demographics such as age, gender and monthly school allowance; and assessed the relationship between the level of sports participation of college students and their smoking behavior. A total of 98 respondents were covered in this study. Data were collected with the use of a prepared questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to answer the objectives of this study. Findings showed that majority of college students from Cavite State University Main Campus was 18 years old, female and had school allowance of more than PhP2,800 per month. Only a few of them were actively involved in sports. Team sports like basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball were the most popular type of sports engaged in by college students. There was a 20 percent smoking prevalence among college students in CvSU as of 2009. College students were most at risk to initiate smoking between the age of 13 and 17 years old. Test statistics revealed that gender significantly affects the smoking behavior of college students in CVSU. Male college students are more likely to smoke than female college students. On the other hand, age and monthly school allowance did not have considerable influence to the smoking behavior of college students. Chi-square test revealed that there was a strong relationship between smoking behavior and level of sports participation of college students. This suggests that participation in sports tend to induce smoking among college students in CVSU.
