Abstract: ABILA, MARIA YASMIN D. “Socio-Economic Profile of Fisherfolks in Cavite”. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics major in Development Economics. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. April 2014. Adviser: Ma. Soledad M. Lising. The study aimed to describe the status of the fisherfolks and development for the fishing industry of Cavite. Specifically, this study aimed to: (1) describe the socio- demographic profile of fisherfolks in Cavite, (2) determine the sources of income of the fisherfolks in Cavite, (3) determine the percentage contribution of the income of the fisherfolks to the total income of the fishing industry, (4) find out the issues involving the fishing industry in Cavite and, (5) determine the perceived economic effect of the issues in the fishing industry in Cavite. The study used descriptive method. An interview schedule was used to gather necessary data from the 250 fisherfolks in the coastal areas of Cavite, namely, Bacoor City, Cavite City, Naic, Rosario, and Tanza. Majority of the fisherfolks in Cavite are male, 21 to 84 years old, who are working on a daily basis and are operators/owners of the boat. The monthly income of the fisherfolks is not enough to sustain their basic needs. Fisherfolks are earning below daily minimum wage rate. However, their total household monthly income is above NSCB standard and World Bank standards. Typhoons, calamities and illegal fishing are the issues faced by the fisherfolks. The fishing industry needs assistance from the local government unit to preserve the resources of the coastal areas in Cavite and to avoid the decrease in income of the fisherfolks.
