Abstract: ALANO, GABRIEL G., GARCIA, CHRISTINE JOY E., RODIL, KAYE G. Hanapbuhay Sa Patay: Experiences of Selected Embalmers in Selected Areas in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2018. Adviser: Ms. Mary Jane A. Amparo. Embalming had become a noble profession that is essential to the funeral industry. Even though this profession is highly rewarding, they are often stigmatized because of handling dead people and being viewed as profiting from death and grief. This study aimed to know the experiences of selected married male embalmers in terms of social relationship and to understand how the selected married male embalmers handle the stigma associated with their work This study made use of qualitative research design to expand the understanding of underlying reasons, opinions and experiences of the participants. Specifically, narrative analysis was utilized in this study which viewed individuals within their social environments as actively conferring meaning onto objects in the world including others and selves. The results showed that most of the participants were accepted by their family members upon the practice of embalming. They were discriminated by other people because of the practice of the said profession. The results also showed that the most prevalent way on how the embalmers handle the stigma associated to their work was through social instruction, in which the participants expound the process and the nature of their profession to get rid of the misconceptions and eradicate the discrimination attached to their profession.
