Adviser: Engr. Eufemio G. Barcelon A motor operated cacao roasting machine was designed, constructed and evaluated at the Department of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, to determine the best possible type of fuel to be used from among the following: coconut shell charcoal, wood charcoal and coconut husk charcoal. The roaster consisted of six major parts: chain and sprocket, roasting chamber, frame and stand ,...i. P assembly, the burnr and the heating source where the fuel was placed. Highly significant results were obtained in terms of, the amount of fuel consumed, temperature of the roasting chamber and roasting time. Results showed that minimum amount of fuel, shorter period of roasting time and highest temperature of roasting chamber was obtained using cocnut shell charcoal. This has A. 'value of o 1.073 kilograms, 116.33 C and 44.66 minutes, 'respectively. This was followed by wood charcoal, the caster having consumed only 1.535 kilograms of fuel and gave a maximum temperature of 103.67 C ,with roasting time of 56.35 minutes. On the other hand, 1.592 kilograms of coconut husk charcoal were consumed during the entire period of roasting operation and gave a o maximum temperature of 99.33 C with a roasting time of 65.57 minutes. The cost of the machine is R1,500. It has a pay-back period of 1.24 years and a break-even point of 229.56 kilograms per year. A net return of tr6 per year can be attained.
