Major Professor: Dr. Rodolfo P. Cabangbang The study was conducted from June 1980 to January 1982 at the Experiment Station of the Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite to identify growth regulators that would a) suppress vegetative growth of cotton, b) kill terminal and flower buds at certain crop stage, and c) defoliate cotton at harvest time. The study was composed of two phases. Phase I - screening of the effect of the growth regulators and Phase II - field testing of the growth regulator treatment combinations. Batac I was the cotton variety used. Ethrel (Ethephon), NAA, IAA, GA3, BA, CCC and SADH. Mandis 1028, Mandis 1436 and Mandis 4102 were the growth regulators used. In the first phase, the results showed that 30 ppm GA3 applied 40 days after emergence (DAE), 3 tbsp/gal of water of Mandis 1028 and Mandis 1436 applied at 40 DAE increased the number of branches significantly; where as 30 ppm IAA and BA applied at 40 DAE and 3 tbsp Mandis 4102/gal water killed terminal and flower buds applied at 80 DAE, maintained 9 to 13 bolls per plant and increased percentage of mature bolls. At 200 ppm CCC and SADH applied at 40 DAE significantly reduced plant height 54 to 48 cm, thus classifying them as growth retardants. At 30 ppm Ethrel applied 40 DAE defoliated cotton. In the second phase the treatment combinations showed the following effects: a) Mandis 4102 + SADH + Ethrel and Mandis 1028 + CCC + Ethrel combination significantly suppressed vegetative growth when applied at 40 DAE although seed cotton yield, lint yield and ginning recovery tend to decrease. b) Mandis 4102 + IAA + Ethrel and GA3 + BA + Ethrel combination killed terminal and flower buds, thus, increasing number of bolls harvested, seedcotton yield, percentage of mature boll, lint yield and ginning recovery. ec) Ethrel applied at 30 ppm 120 DAE (85% flossing ) defoliated cotton. With the above results it is advisable to spray Mandis 4102 + SADH + Ethrel combinations to suppress luxuriant growth or GA3 + BA + Ethrel and Mandis 4102 + AA + Ethrel combinations to kill terminal and floral buds and increase the number of boll, percentage of mature boll, seedcotton yield, lint yield and ginning recovery.

LONTOC, VICENTE G. University of the Philippines at Los Banos, February 1984. Response of Cotton to the Application of Some Growth Regulators. Major Professor: Dr. Rodolfo P. Cabangbang

The study was conducted from June 1980 to January 1982 at the Experiment Station of the Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite to identify growth regulators that would a) suppress vegetative growth of cotton, b) kill terminal and flower buds at certain crop stage, and c) defoliate cotton at harvest time.

In the second phase the treatment combinations showed the following effects:

a) Mandis 4102 + SADH + Ethrel and Mandis 1028 + CCC + Ethrel combination significantly suppressed vegetative growth when applied at 40 DAE although seed cotton yield, lint yield and ginning recovery tend to decrease.

b) Mandis 4102 + IAA + Ethrel and GA3 + BA + Ethrel combination killed terminal and flower buds, thus, increasing number of bolls harvested, seedcotton yield, percentage of mature boll, lint yield and ginning recovery.

ec) Ethrel applied at 30 ppm 120 DAE (85% flossing ) defoliated cotton.
