For the past years, metal industry was identified that generate numerous problem including occupational accidents and injuries. Instinctively, organizations minimize these through implementing health and safety management system. This study analyzed the effect of OHSAS 18001 on the occupational injury rate of selected OHSAS 18001 certified metal industries. Specifically, this research attempted to: (1) determine the annual injury rate of selected OHSAS 18001 certified metal industries in Cavite and Laguna; (2) determine the business drivers in implementing OHSAS 18001; and (3) assess the significant effect of barriers on the success in implementing OHSAS 18001 on the occupational injury rate of selected OHSAS 18001 certified metal industries in Cavite and Laguna. The study was limited to the personnel who are knowledgeable about OHSAS 18001 implementation inside the metal industries or company in Cavite and Laguna. Accordingly, data were collected using a questionnaire and brief interview. The results of this study indicated that OHSAS 18001 certified companies has lesser injury rate after implementing OHSAS 18001. Also, corporate policy and a good tool for improving health and safety performance persuades metal companies in implementing OHSAS 18001. Additionally, it was identified that several barriers have significant effects on the success of implementing OHSAS 18001 including trust between employee and management, hazard identification emergency preparedness and response, teamwork and compliance and so on. Finally, the study provided some conclusions and recommendations regarding the companies’ insufficiency and how the company can correct and improve those identified deficiencies and achieve much successful OHSAS 18001.
