Abstract: COTONER, JOHN SYMON VINCE, MANLANGIT, BOOTS JAYSON. SYNERGISTIC EFFECT OF CHARCOAL AND MALUNGGAY (Moringa oleifera) SEEDS AGAINST Salmonella typhi. An Undergraduate Research Study, Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. February 2018. Adviser: Hosea Dl. Matel PhD. Co-Adviser: Charmaine V. Rosales This study spec fically aimed to determine the most efficient ratio of combined charcoal and Moringa oleifera seeds as water treatment, and determine the length of time required for charcoal and Moringa oleifera to inhibit Salmonella typhi. The main purpose of this study was to determine the synergistic effect of charcoal and Moringa oleifera seeds against Salmonella typhi. Positive control, negative control and five treatments made from mixed charcoal and malunggay powder were used for the study. Pure colonies of Salmonella typhi were used to contaminate the water. Charcoal and malunggay seeds were inserted in teabags and immersed n the contaminated water. Treatment was applied within 24 hours and the water was pour plated at eight hours interval. The effect of charcoal and malunggay seeds in Salmonella typhi were evaluated through monitoring the bacterial load. The study shows that there was synergistic effect of charcoal and malunggay seeds against Salmonella typhi by reduced colonies in the water. The positive control resulted in zero CFU/ml after 24 hours and negative control showed no remarkable result. Treatment one which contain 6 grams of malunggay resulted in not safe for contact recreation after 8 hours; safe for contact recreation after 16 hours; and is acceptable for drinking water after 24 hours. Treatment two which contain 6 grams of charcoal resulted in not safe for contact recreation after 8 and 16 hours; and safe for contact recreation after 24 hours. Treatment three which contain 3 grams of charcoal and 3 grams of malunggay resulted in not safe for contact recreation after 8 hours; safe for contact recreation after 16 hours; and acceptable for drinking water after 24 hours. Treatment four which contain four and a half grams malunggay and one and a half grams charcoal resulted in not safe for contact recreation after 8 hours; safe for contact recreation after 16 hours; and acceptable for drinking water after 24 hours. Treatment five which contain four and a half grams charcoal and one and a half grams malunggay resulted in not safe for contact recreation after 8 and 16 hours; and safe for contact recreation after 24 hours.
