This study was conducted to determine the home and school correlates OE the academic performance of the Grade VI pupils in English in the District of Silang I, Division OE Cavite, for School Year 1994—1995. Specifically, it aimed to determine i: the 1 . home variables that relate to pupils’ academic performance in English with respect to: 1.a . amount OE time spent per week reading English books or magazines. 1.b amount OE time spent per week studying the English subject. 1.c amount. of time spent per week watching English TV programs. 1.d amount of time spent per week by parent’s tutoring their children; and 1.e . number of English books or magazines pupils have at home 2 school variables that relate to pupils’ academic performance in English with respect to: 2.a amount of time spent per week reading English books or magazines in the library. 2.b teaching methods/ techniques used. 2.c . teachers' performance as rated by pupils; and 2.d . teachers t profile in terms of their educational attainment, teaching experience and civil service eligibility. 3 . home predictor of pupil’s academic performance in English. 4 . school predictor of pupil’s academic performance English. 5 . pupils' academic performance in English. 6 . relationship between pupils' academic performance with home and school variables. The study used the descriptive—correlational method, making use of questionnaires as its principal instrument, to gather the desired data. The respondents were the 325 Grade VI pupils and the 25 Grade VI teachers in English. The statistical tests employed were Frequency count, percentage, mean standard deviation, multiple correlation, and multiple regression analysis. After analyzing and interpreting the data, the following were revealed: Majority of the pupil respondents spent inadequate amount OE time in reading English books or magazines at home, in studying the English subject and in watching English TV programs. The time spent by parents in tutoring their children was also inadequate. Most of the pupils had inadequate number OE books or magazines al: home. The academic performance OE pupils in English was way below the range of 79—82 (Satisfactory). In general, most pupils spent inadequate amount of time in reading English books 01 magazines in the library. Majority of the teachers' performance in teaching English as a subject were rated by pupils as excellent. The teaching methods/ Techniques commonly used by teachers were corrective teaching or remedial instruction, review, discussion, drill spelling, reading and question and answer. Likewise, most OE the teachers in English had Bachelors” degree in Education, two were Master of Alts graduate, three were non —Education degree holders. More than one—ha IE OE the teachers had less experience in teaching, while a few of them had been in the service for a long time. Most OE the teachers had civil service eligibility. Four OE the selected home and school variables were significantly z elated to pupils’ academic performance, namely: a) amount OE time spent per week reading English books OE magazines at homer b) amount of time spent. per week in Studying the English subject, c) teachers t performance as rated by pupils, d) number of teaching method/ techniques used Amount of time spent by pupils in watching TV program in English, parents tutoring their children in English, and reading English books or magazines in the library, number of books/ magazines home educational attainment and teaching experiences were not significantly related to pupils' academic performance in English. Reading English books or magazines at home, studying the selected subject, teachers' performance as rated by pupils and the number of methods/techniques used by teachers were found to be the predictors OE pupils academic performance in English.
