Abstract: ARTISTA, DESIREE CRESINO, Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, April 1997. "DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A SOLAR DRYER WITH AUXILIARY HEATER AND WIND-POWERED VENTILATOR". Engr. Renato B. Cubilla, Adviser. The study, "Development and Evaluation of a Solar Dryer with Auxiliary Heater and Wind—Powered Ventilator", was constructed in Pangil, Amadeo, Cavite and evaluated in the School of Engineering, Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite from January to February 1997. Specifically, it aimed to: design a dryer which can be used for two drying methods; evaluate the dryer as a mechanical dryer and solar dryer; evaluate the dryer in terms of drying efficiency; and determine the cost and return of using the dryer. The dryer was composed of the following parts: drying chamber, solar collector, auxiliary heater, chimney and ventilator. The dryer was evaluated using fish, pineapple and banana. Results showed that method of drying used gave a significant effect on the drying temperature, drying time, drying rate and drying efficiency of the dryer. Best result was obtained using mechanical drying method giving higher drying rate, shorter drying time and higher drying efficiency of the dryer. Drying operation using mechanical drying gave average drying time of 12.43 hours, 15.42 hours and 4.36 hours when drying fish, pineapple and banana, respectively. The drying rate was 4.67 ?MC/hr, 4.45 9611C/hr and 10.84 %4C/hr in drying fish, pineapple and banana, respectively. The drying efficiency obtained was 74.72 percent, 91.33 percent and 67.23 percent in drying fish, pineapple and banana, respectively, using the same drying method. The recorded drying temperature using the same method ranged from 38-52.5 °C for the whole drying operation. The cost of the dryer was P 11,501.50. It has an annual gross revenue of P 46,500 and a net income of P2,397.20. Pay back period of the dryer was computed to be 4.8 year. The break-even point was 2,154 hr/yr. The dryer had a benefit cost ratio of 1.1.
