Abstract: ILAGAN, MA. FATIMA C., Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 1998. "Screening of Bacillus sp. for Antimicrobial Activity". Adviser: Dr. Yolanda A. Ilagan This study was conducted primarily to isolate Bacillus species from the soil. Specifically, it aimed to screen the antimicrobial activity of the Bacillus isolates and to identify those species capable of producing antibiotics. A total of 108 Bacillus were isolated from the 27 soil samples collected in Cavite. The cross-streak assay method was used to Screen the antimicrobial activity of these isolates. Twenty-three isolates showed positive results on the assay. Nineteen of them had inhibitory effect against the growth of Micrococcus luteus, seven against Bacillus subtilis, ten against Proteus vulgaris and five against Candida krusei. Based on cultural, morphological, and physiological tests, the isolates were found to belong to six species. Ten isolates were identified to be Bacillus polymyxa, one as Bacillus licheniformis, two as Bacillus cereus, three as Bacillus megaterium, four as Bacillus subtilis, and three as Bacillus pumilus.
