Abstract: MARASIGAN, MARIFI MONTILLA, "Cost and Return Analysis of Kalamay Buna Production. Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Economics, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 1999 Adviser: Dr. Alice T. Valerio. A study was conducted to determine the socio-economic characteristics of kalamay-Buna producers; assess the profitability of kalamay-Buna production; describe the production practices; and determine the problems encountered in the production and marketing of kalamay-Buna. The study was conducted in Buna Lejos, Indang, Cavite where the production of kalamay was existent. A sample size of 50 producers was used as a source of information. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, mean and range. Cost and return was used to assess the profitability of the business. Profitability ratios such as Ratio of Net Income to Sales and Ratio of Net Income to Total Cost were also used. Results of the study showed that the average age of the respondents was 47 years. All producers were female, 88 percent were already married while five percent were widow. Majority of them reached only intermediate and primary education. Their average years in business was 18 years. Sixty-six percent of the respondents had an annual family income ranging from P72,000 to PI 50,719 In general, kalamay-Buna was considered as a major source of livelihood for the residents of Buna Lejos. The average volume of kalamay produced per week was 87 tipi for kalamay na makunat. The average disposal price Vas P 10.00 with a total value of P870.00. On the other hand, average production volume of kalamay with young coconut was P357 (big and small size) with a total value of about P2,325. The monthly total cost of the producers ranged from P 1,821.29 to P 13,671.83 with an average of P6,215.14. Majority had a total cost ranging from P 1,821 to P4, 191 23. The average gross return was P 12,780.00 with a monthly average net income. The ratio of net income to total cost was P 140 which means that for every P 100 spent in production, there was a return of P 140. The ratio of net income to sales was 0.51 percent which means that for every one-peso worth of sales there was a net return ofP.51 The main production problem encountered by the producers was lack of coconut as raw material. They had also problem on the marketability of the products.
