"The short stories of Jose Garcia Villa constitute a sizeable chunk of his oeuvre. His early reputation restated on the publication of his only collection of stories. Footnote to Youth: Tales of the Philippines and Others, by Scribner's in 1933. Since his reinvention as a poet, however, his stories, except for a few titles, have all but been forgotten. An assessment of Villa's contribution to Philippine literature and of his development as a writer would be incomplete without taking his short stories - whether meritorious, meretricious, or mediocre - into consideration. The Collected Stories of Jose Garcia Villa makes available for the first time Villa's extant stories in a single volume."--Back cover.
