Abstract: ABELEDO, MARIE JOY S., CRUZ, CHRISTIAN PAUL M., HERNANE, CHLOE ANTHONETTE S. "Can Breaking Up Be A Relief?": Narrative Experiences of People Breaking Up from a Long-Term Relationship in Selected Areas in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Ms. Mary Jane A. Amparo. The study set its purpose to discuss the experiences of people breaking up from a long-term relationship. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine: 1. what made them decide to end the relationship; 2. what they did to cope with the breakup from a long-term relationship; and 3. what is the aftermath of breakup from a long-term relationship in the lives of the people involved. The participants of the study were selected young adults aged 18 to 35, residing in Tanza, General Trias, and Mendez, Cavite, who experienced breaking up from seven to 10 years of long-term relationship. The participants experienced at least one year of being single after their long-term relationship. Results indicated that all the participants were genuinely happy on the first years, but as their relationship went by, lack of trust and communication began, as misunderstandings, struggles and problems arose and gradually took over their relationship. Results revealed that the participants who experienced breakup from long-term relationship established friendship first before pursuing their romantic relationship. This was why they did not have a hard time moving on to their long-term relationship. They felt relieved after their breakup from their long-term relationship because they knew their worth. They chose not to settle for less and to love themselves more. Most of the participants had an optimistic tone because they managed to be strong despite of their painful experience. Most of them had progressive structure because they had goals. On the other hand, one participant had a pessimistic tone and regressive structure because of she regretted their breakup. After the breakup from their long-term relationship, the pain and experiences taught them to be more matured and to become a better person for themselves and for their future relationship.
