ADESNA, MARIZ E., ESCOBIN, ANN VALERAE C., HICARO, MARRY JOY A. Challenges, Life Aspirations and Inspirations of Athletes with Visual Impairment in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Ms, Jezreel C. Del Espiritu Santo
The study was conducted from January to February 2019 where the researchers gathered participants in different areas in the province of Cavite. The participants were athletes with acquired visual impairment, ages 18 to 60 years old, an active player and currently residing in Cavite. Specifically, the study sought to: (1) describe the life experiences of the participants before entering sports and acquiring visual impairment; (2) extrapolate and better understand the challenges encountered by the participants during their crucial years of being visually impaired; and (3) analyze the life aspirations and inspirations which motivate the athletes with acquired visual impairment to enter the world of sports. Qualitative design with narrative approach was used wherein purposive snowball technique has been utilized in this research. Interviews and recordings were done to gather data. The researchers interviewed six participants who competed in some known sports events like Paragames, Paralympics, SEA Games, ASEAN Summit and Palarong Pambansa. Four of them were in athletics; the other one was a chess player and the last one was a soccer player. Before they acquired the visual impairment, they described their life as normal, simple and able to do what they want. However, when they acquired the impairment, they experienced various challenges like adjustments, discrimination, bullying, stress, and even suicidal attempt.
They were able to overcome these challenges through the support and encouragement that they received from their families, friends, coach, and the Lord who served as their inspirations. Based on their narratives, everyone had a sense of achievement and recognition as their aspiration. It was concluded that psychological maturity, positive outlook in life, continuous self-development and improvement using negative experiences as motivation and the people who inspire them are the significant factors on why the participants still strive to reach their dreams and continue their career in sports.
