Abstract: MAANO, ABIGAIL R., MARAON, JOHN BERT R. and OBTERA, CARLOS LOUIS V. "Te Casa El Fuego": Traumatic Experiences, Coping Strategy and Resiliency of Residential Fire Victims at Barangay 36 Cavite City. Undergraduate Thesis.Bachelor of Science in Psychology.Cavite State University Indang, Cavite. May 2017. Adviser: Ms. Alyssa Kae S. Alegre, RPm This study aimed to determine the: (1) experiences of the fire victims during and after the disaster; (2) how the victims deal with the disaster that happened; (3) coping mechanism used by the victims after the residential fire. With the use of purposive sampling, the participants must be a victim of residential fire in Barangay 36 Cavite City, a parent and adult (21-40 years old). The interview questionnaire prepared by the researchers will be the main instruments in getting the information needed, supported by the Stress response theory, Cognitive-motivational-relational theory of coping and Fight or flight response theory. This study will be conducted on March 2018. The research revealed most possible mental health problem among fire victims is post-traumatic stress disorder. Fire can provoke or worsen mental health problem of the victims. The way to lessen the probability of the fire victims to get traumatized is the use of coping strategies during and after the traumatic event. A study had affirmed that the ability of fire victims to cope with increasing hazards in Philippine rural community is rooted in their ability to adjust their everyday lifestyles. Emotionally focused coping and self-blame were associated with less stress than were problem focused coping and denial and control-oriented, coping style, in which the perception of control is actively created or maintained, can be effective in reducing distress associated with technological catastrophes. Resilience was less rampant among those who were more highly exposed in the traumatic event. In terms of gender, girls proved to use resilience factors such as seeking and getting help more often compared to boys who use physical reactions. Most of the victim's psychological needs were met through close relationship of the victims and only some of them need mental healthcare. Victims need a strong social support from people who are knowledgeable and skilled in the psychological problem faced. The study is a qualitative multiple case study design, wherein the researchers will use self-construct questionnaire. The systematic subjective approach was case study design. Qualitative case study methodology provides tools for researches to study complex phenomena within their context (Baxter & Jack, 2008). A case study design should be considered when: (a) the focus of the study is to answer "how" and "why" questions; (b) the behaviour of the participants cannot be manipulated; (c) you want to cover contextual conditions because you believe they are relevant to the phenomenon under study; or (d) the boundaries are not clear between the phenomenon and context (Yin 2003 cited Baxter & Jack 2008). The researchers will use this approach to be able to determine the traumatic experiences, coping mechanism and resilience of the residential fire. As stated above, before the residential fire most of the participant's family conditions were in stable and wealthy type of living. During the residential fire most of the participants were sleeping and they are not aware that there was a fire happening around their community, after the residential fire, all the victims received financial assistance from government, NGO's, friends and relatives.
