Abstract: AUTRIZ, ARIANNE E. & CADAYONA, JOSHUA Q. Pedal De Kalawang: Narrative Experiences of Old Age Padyak Drivers in Intramuros, Manila. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Ms. Armi Grace B. Desinganio MAEd. This qualitative study sought to unravel the occupational experiences of eight old age padyak drivers in Intramuros, Manila. More precisely, this study aimed to: 1) determine how the participants end up into their current job as padyak drivers; 2) identify the adversities related to occupation that the participants had encountered since they began working as padyak drivers; 3) reveal how they adapt to those predicaments; 4) know the reasons why the participants continue doing strenuous work despite their old age, and; 5) unveil how satisfied or regretful are the participants towards their chosen occupation. Their claims and premises were subjected to narrative analysis. Upon the comprehensive and contextual analysis of each narrative, the findings revealed that encouragement from others, lack of opportunity and unfavorable past work experiences are the reasons for them in entering padyak driving. The competition, former illegality of their work, financial instability, physical illnesses, fatigue and weakness, and age discrimination as impediments prevailed in their narrative. Their implemented solutions for these adversities were nonviolence, conformity to the law, seeking help from others, rest, and acceptance and perseverance. In as much as, survival, physical wellness beneficence, upholding principles and attainment of leisure were the reasons in their pursuit of padyak driving despite old age. Lastly, seven participants expressed their satisfaction in their chosen occupation whereas one posited regret.
