Abstract: THE RETAILING OF FRESH FRUITS AND one hundred retailers’ respondents were surveyed in the public market of Cavite City for this study. The retailers were categorized into three main groups, the vegetable! Wholesale retailers, the vegetables Retailer and the fruit retailers. the vegetables handled by these retailer’s ware cabbage, chayote, ampalaya, onions, potatoos, tantoas and garlic. They were the kinds of vegetables which ware available throughout the year and commonly sold by almost all of the retailers. Papaya, citrus fruits, guava and the three varieties of bananas (latundan, saba, lacatan) were the fresh fruits sold by the retailers. Farm products of these retailers came from various places. The main sources of the vegetables they purchased were from Manila and suburbs, Batangas and Baguio while the fruits came from the upland towns of Cavite particularly Indang, Amadeo and Silang. The volume of purchases and sales of the vegetable wholesale retailers and vegetable retailers were computed on a per kilogram basis while the volume of purchases and sales of the fruit retailers were computed on a piece basis. The vegetable wholesale retailers had the largest volume of purchases and sales among the three types of retailers. However, the vegetable wholesale retailers had also greater expenses than the other two groups of retailers due to the fact that they obtained their products. directly from the wholesalers. Although the vegetable wholesale retailers had greater too expenses than the other retailers, they had the highest net profit among the retailers. The weekly average net profit of the three types of retailers were as follows: P150.47 for the 'vegetable wholesale retailers, 51.76 for vegetable retailers and P62.61 for fruit retailers. The weekly average profit. of all the retailers was 88.26 and the weekly average expenses were $42.80. The most important problems of the retailers surveyed were lack of sufficient capital, consumers behavior, credit collection and lack of storage facilities.
