Abstract: LAVAPIE, IAN BENEDICT L. and POBLETE, CARMELITA MAY B. Development of a Microcontroller-Based Color Identifier for the Visually Impaired. Undergraduate Design Project. Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Engr. Nemilyn A. Fadchar. A study was conducted from December 2018 to May 2019 at Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite to develop a microcontroller-based color identifier for people with visual impairment. Specifically, it aimed to: 1. design and construct an Arduino-based microcontroller circuit for the system; 2. develop a program for the system, 3. design and construct a hardware unit of the device; 4. test and evaluate the performance of the device; and 5. determine the cost of the developed system. The design project consists of a color identifier which identifies the color of the scanned surface by reading the reflected light value when flashed with a white LED, a microcontroller unit for reading and processing input data, a speaker and a screen for voice and readable output, and tact switches for mode selection, language selection, and mute option. The device is rechargeable as well via a micro USB port. Based on the results of the evaluation, the project met the given objectives. The system was able to produce output in accordance to the input and mode. In the technical evaluation, the hardware and software operations underwent several tests, and concluded that the materials and program uploaded is reliable and working properly. The device was presented to three (3) doctors and three (3) SPED teachers, who all gave positive response towards the device and its potential for further improvements. Five out of six professionals certified the safety and accuracy of the device and acknowledged that it can be further improved for the benefit of the target users. The production of the color identifier had a total cost of P 3,591.00.
