The study "Effect of Mulching Thickness on the Growth and Yield of Garlic" was conducted at Mahabang Kahoy Lejos, Indang, Cavite from November 1979 to March 1980. It aimed to determine which of the given thickness of rice straw mulch (control, 2 centimeters thick, 4 centi-meters thick, 6 centimeters thick and 8 centimeters thick) would produce big cloves of garlic. An area of 66 square meters was cultivated and divided into four equal blocks and further subdivided into five treatments including the control. Fertilizers were broadcast and mixed thoroughly with the soil before planting the bulbills. Different thickness of rice straw were spread over the newly planted beds to serve as mulch. Germination took place after the fifth day of planting. In the first three weeks, the growth of the plants was vigorous and uniform except in the control; most of the leaves were slightly yellowish and the plants were stunted in growth. The cloves matured 120 days from the time of planting. Treatment 4 (6 centimeters of rice straw mulch) gave the highest yield with 5,040 kilograms per hectare. The lowest computed yield was obtained from T1 (Control) which gave 4,440 kilograms.
