Abstract: OCAMPO, MICHAEL ARIAS, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 1999. "Adaptability of Ten Introduced Heading Lettuce Varieties in Cavite". B.S. Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Horticulture, Adviser: Prof. Analita dM Magsino. The adaptability of ten introduced heading lettuce (Lactuca saliva, Linn.) varieties in Cavite namely: T1 — Braveheart, T2 — Marksman, T3 — Arrow, T4 — Casino, T5 — President; T6 — Salinas, T7 — Vanguard, T8 — Climax, T9 — U-Lakes, and T10 — Great Lakes R-200-95, together with T11 — Great Lakes (check) were evaluated under field conditions. The study aimed to compare the performance of the ten varieties to the check variety (Great Lakes) and identify potential parents for future breeding program. Qualitative and quantitative characters such as vigor (15 DAT, 30 DAT and at harvest), plant uniformity, plant color, insect pest resistant rating, compactness rating, number of days to head formation and maturity, average leaf span, head size and head weight were the parameters studied. Sensory evaluation was conducted to determine the acceptability of the different varieties in terms of color of edible leaves, appearance, crispness, juiciness and bitterness. All varieties tested, excluding Vanguard and Climax which exhibited bolting, were adapted in Cavite. All varieties produced heads heavier than the check. Two varieties, Braveheart and Salinas were found out promising because of their earliness to head maturity, compact heads and better yields. Three varieties, Casino, Vanguard and U- Lakes were rated moderately resistant to pest and could be further screened as possible materials for future breeding programs. All varieties except Vanguard gained better than average rating in the sensory evaluation test, hence, acceptable to consumers.
