A study on the management practices employed by some selected backyard swine raisers in Kaytambog, Indang, Cavite was conducted from April, 1981 to June, 1981. It aimed to determine the mechanics of operation employed by backyard swine raisers in Kaytambog. Five piggeries with 17 fatteners were used in the study. The largest and the smallest piggeries surveyed had total floor areas of 64 square meters and 24 square meters, respectively. The breeds raised were Large White, Landrace and Hyphor which were purchased from well-known piggery projects. The animals were fed with commercial feeds and supplementary feeds like gabi, rice bran aria ipil-ipil leaves. Liberal and wet feeding was used by the raisers. Hogs were disposed at the age of 5-6 months to butchers on a liveweight basis. The most common problems encountered by the raisers were: high cost of feeds, lack of capital to finance the operation, fluctuating prices of hogs, and the presence of middlemen.
