A farm practice project on fattening hogs was conducted at Halang, Naic, Cavite from August 29, 1990 to January 9, 1991 with the aim of acquiring experience and skill in the actual handling of the project. Three weaner piglets were used in this project with an average initial weight of 11.5 kilograms. The three weanlings were provided with commercially prepared hog starter and finisher rations. These commercial feeds were supplemented with cassava leaf meal and rice bran to reduce expenses. After four months of feeding the three pigs attained a final weight of 210 kgs and were disposed live, for P8,000.00. The total expenses incurred for the project amounted to P7,792.64. The project realized a net income of P277.36 during the period, and had a return on investment of 3.25%. It however gave a labor income of P661.29 to the proponent. Backyard hog fattening project can still be a source of immediate employment for new agricultural graduates.
