A farm practice project was conducted at Marahan, Alfonso, Cavite from August 2 to December 3, 1993. This activity aimed to provide the student with actual experience in managing backyard swine production project and to prove that swine project can provide additional income to small farmers. Five fattening hogs weighing an average of 16.4 kg were fed with commercially prepared feed mash for a period of four months. During the duration of the project the total cost of production amounted to P17,226.34, produced 401 kg liveweight of hogs or an average of 80.2 kg/head. The Project earned P20,165.00 gross income giving a net income of P2,938.66. The return on investment (ROI) was 16.48%. Aside from the profit obtained from the operation of the project, the student was able to gain actual experience in handling backyard hog fattening, hence, supplementing her knowledge learned in the classroom. Additional skills in the proper operation and management of hog enterprise were also learned.
