"This book acquaints students with the nature and language of mathematics. It has 9 chapters which are independent of each other. Chapter 1 explores the nature and characteristics of mathematics, the language and symbols used in mathematics, and inductive and deductive reasoning to predict patterns. It also investigates mathematical patterns found in nature. Chapter 2 presents the basic concepts of logic and the various rules of inferences and replacements necessary to prove the validity of arguments. Chapter 3 discusses the building blocks in the study of statistics, the levels of measurement of random variables, the methods of descriptive statistics, the linear relationship between two sets of random variables, and the distribution of data that exhibit a “bell-shaped curve.” Chapter 4 studies simple and compound interests, amortized loans, annuities, installment buying, and paying by credit cards. Chapter 5 reviews linear equations and inequalities and extends graphical solutions of systems of linear inequalities. It also probes the geometry of linear programming and introduces the algebraic method of solving linear programming problems. Chapter 6 analyzes the standard concepts and calculations of length, area, and volume. It gives a brief history of the major achievements in ancient geometries, as well as clarifies analytic geometry through the study of conic sections. Moreover, it explains the fundamental ratios of the right triangle trigonometry and the foundations of fractal geometry. Chapter 7 deals with the basic concepts of graph theory and networks and certain algorithms to solve network problems. Chapter 8 examines the various systems of voting and apportionment and illustrates their applications in real-life situations. Chapter 9 dwells on the introductory nature of coding theory and cryptology, particularly the different methods of translating messages into codes for safe and secure transmission over communication media. It also tackles the mathematics used in Universal Product Codes (UPC)."--Back cover.
