Summary: "Gender and Society: The Whys of Women, Their Oppressions, and Paths to Liberation introduces women–their status and plight in society and the world. It examines the problems of discrimination and inequality of women as a structurally oppressed gender. It also tackles women’s liberation and empowerment, and how movements from various parts of the globe have contributed to achieving gender equality. The first part of the book analyzes gender and sexuality, and discusses how women learn and connect with the world. It then explains the situation of women on the twelve critical areas of concern of the Beijing Platform for Action, followed by their role in development. The second part starts with explaining the roots of oppression and goes on to explore the history of the feminist movement both in the Western world and in the Philippines. The third and last part presents special topics on issues and challenges concerning both men and women. It is hoped that through this book, students will gain understanding and knowledge to become future leaders who will advocate for a more gender-responsive society."--Back cover.
