OLITOQUIT, JAY MAR B. Potential Sources and Accumulation of Lead (Pb) in
Fresh Milk of Carabaos Farmed at General Trias City, Cavite: A Basis For a Proposed
Action Plan. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science.
Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Mr. Glenn Bryan A.
Creencia.
The study was conducted in Barangay Pasong Kawayan I and Buenavista Ill in General
Trias City, Cavite from January to March 2019. Generally, the study
assessed the accumulation of lead (Pb) in carabao's milk and its potential sources in General
Trias, Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) determine the industrial establishments along
PCRW that are possible sources of lead (Pb) contamination;
(2) identify the farming practices of the carabao owners in terms of pasture and sources of food
and water thru photo documentation; (3) determine the accumulation
level of lead (Pb) in carabao fresh milk; and (4) create an action plan based on the results of
the study.
Two barangays were chosen to be the sampling sites of the study which are the Pasong
Kawayan I and Buenavista Ill. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to identify the
possible lead sources in Pasong Camachile Watershed. Photo documentation and observation
were done to identify the farming practices of the
carabao owners which include the sources of food and water, and the pasture. Twelve samples
of carabao milk were obtained from the sampling sites. The milk samples were acid digested
for Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) testing. There are 17 major industries along
the Pasong Camachile Watershed inCavite. The spring and river are the sources of water for
the carabaos. The grasses and feeds are the sources of food. There is no lead (Pb) detected in
all milk samples.
On the proposed action plan, it is suggested to conduct seminars and training for the
farmers to gain knowledge on the possible lead (Pb) contamination and to create activities that
will reinforce the maintenance of milk quality among the LGUs and dairy centers.
