Abstract: CAJERIC, BEBELYN D, CONCHA, MA. MELGENE N. and JAMIG SHERLY SHELA T. Status and Prospects of Sugarcane Farms in Magallanes, Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics major in Agricultural Economics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Prof. Roderick M. Rupido. The study was conducted to determine the status and prospects of sugarcane farms in Magallanes, Cavite. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the demographic profile of sugarcane farm owners; the status of sugarcane farms in terms of the size of the farms, financial aspects, and management aspects; the prospects of sugarcane farm based on internal environment and lastly to determine the problems encountered of sugarcane farms in internal environment. The study was conducted in selected barangays of Magallanes, particularly in Bendita, Caluangan, Kabulusan, San Agustin and Urdaneta. Data were obtained from 94 farm owners. Descriptive statistical tools such as frequency count, range, percentage, and weighted mean were used to present and analyze the data. Likert Scale was also used in determining the levels of common problems of the owners. In the analysis of profitability, return on investment (ROI), return on sales, and gross profit ratio were employed. The computed return on investment was 45 percent, return on sales was 65 percent and gross profit ratio was 98 percent. Prospects of sugarcane farms were determined through analyzing the status of sugarcane farms and internal environment in terms of, financial aspects, profitability measures, and management aspects. The study found out that the problems encountered by sugarcane farm owners included long period of time of return on investment, lack of government support, high tax charges, profitability, and suitability to the area of the target market. In order, to solve or lessen the problem of high cost of inputs and high prevalence of insect and diseases the government, specifically the Department of Agriculture must have extension workers who will disseminate technology through seminars and farm demonstration. There must also be researchers on proper diagnosis of disease and the right amounts to treat them. The government may have program that will support farm owners in nurturing their farms through lowering the prices of inputs. On the other hand, farm owners may acquire technical know-how in the propagation of sugarcane through seminars, trainings, and workshops. Lastly, the government may help sugarcane farm owners by implementing the programs such as policy reforms to support the growth of the industry.
