Abstract: VILLANUEVA, RETCH B. AND ZABAL, JANNELLA VIENE B. Entrepreneur's Gender and Its Effect on the Business Performance of Selected SMEs in Cavite. An undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics, major in Business. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite June 2019. Adviser Dr. Luzviminda A. Rodrin. The study was conducted generally to compare the business performance of male and female entrepreneurs in selected SMEs in Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to: determine the socio-demographic profile of male and female entrepreneurs such as age, civil status, level of education and business background; (2) determine the profile of the business such as of type of organization, initial capitalization, firm size, years of operation, product/service offered, operational expense, and the total investment of the owner; (3) examine the business performance of male and female owned SMEs such as profit, employee satisfaction and consumer satisfaction; (4)determine if there is significant relationship between male and female entrepreneurs in terms of financial and non-financial indicators of business performance; (5) determine if there is significant relationship between gender and business performance of entrepreneurs; (6) and identify the problems encountered by the owners of SMEs. The study was conducted in selected SMEs in Cavite, namely: Trece Martires City, Damarifias, Silang, General Mariano Alvarez and Carmona. Primary data were gathered through personal interviews with 300 participants using a prepared questionnaire. The participants were 56 male and 44 female entrepreneurs in Selected SMEs in Cavite. The data gathered from the survey were analyzed using the mean, frequency count and percentage. T-test and Chi-Square were also used to compare the data. A socio-demographic profile and business profile of male and female entrepreneurs describe the characteristics of the business owner. Typically, male and female business owners, belong to young and middle age group, married, attained formal education and were engaged in sole proprietorship type of organization. The type of organization mostly engaged in by the participants is sole proprietorship which had 61 percent male and 73 percent female participants. They were mostly engaged in water refilling station. These enterprises were under the micro enterprise category and had reached their five years of operation. The average operational expenses for male entrepreneurs was P811 ,963 and P556,709 for female entrepreneurs. Both male and female entrepreneurs had an average profit of over five million pesos. Lastly, the average investments amounted to P 1,218,999 and P4,350,015, respectively. The study revealed that both employees and consumers were extremely satisfied with the business performance of male and female entrepreneurs. The computed T-test showed that there was no significant difference between male and female entrepreneurs in terms of financial and non-financial indicators of business performance. The computed Chi-Square test also showed that there was no significant relationship between gender and business performance. Based on the problems encountered by the male and female entrepreneurs, competition was the main problem in any nature of business, while price of raw materials and the low demand of products were also cited as problems due to inflation.
