This paper is a qualitative study focused on the experience of Akbayan in Philippine Congress from 1998 to present. Specifically, it intended to know; (1) the background of the organization including their nature, purpose, and advocacies; (2) the challenges and difficulties they encountered in the Philippine Congress; (3) the strategies and actions they employed to win every election and to be able to enter the Philippine Congress; and (4) Their accomplishments in Philippine Congress. There were two (2) participants that cooperated in the study, and they were the key-informant of Akbayan that were selected through a purposive sampling technique which an interview guide was utilized as research instrument. Descriptive narrative analysis research method was used in this study.
This study concluded that the participants' discerned the nature, purpose, and advocacy of Akbayan is the backbone of the organization to fulfill the true representation they want for the people and for a better society. Also, they stated that the through non-violent act they can achieve their advocacies.
The participants observed the challenges and difficulties of Akbayan where they
believe the need of revision of the Party-list system act. Because of the institution and a Problematic law or system, the good plan for the society is being corrupted. Instead of
giving hope for the people especially for the marginalized and underrepresented, it happened to be a mode of corruption.
The participants discerned the strategies and actions they employed for every challenge and difficulty they encountered from 1998 to present. Also, one of the participants stated that there was no certain solution or blueprint in every challenge, it depends on the issue but one thing for sure is that they can always get some ideas or ways that they used before to face another issue.
Therefore, through tracing the experiences of Akbayan in Philippine Congress from 1998 to present, the researcher concluded that to be able to go beyond the limits that the institution is dictating they need to focus on the vision that they want for the society. Akbayan stand firm on what they believe even they had a coalition on a bigger party and stay still on the track of their purpose in fulfilling their goals and advocacies in a peaceful way. Despite of the problematic system, they never stop trying in finding ways to conquer the challenges of the institution and of the people. Thus, they were able to position one of their members in senate. As for them, they cannot afford to lose any chance in bringing change to the people.
