PHAN-QUANG-VINH, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, Tebruary, 1980. Studies onparcLae_Strusctatilll Relation to Serum ACTH Levels at Weanin and Serum CPK Activity at Different Stages of Growth and Propranolol Effects on Responses of Pigs Exposed to Acute Solar Meat Stress . Major Professor Dr. TEODORO A. ABILAY
Four experiments were done (a) to evaluate the possibility of using serum adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) levels right after weaning and serum creatine phosphokinase', as stress-susceptibility index, (b) to determine the castration effect on stress-susceptibility and (c) to compare the responses of animals exposed to solar heat stress with and without propranolol treatment in terms of pulse rate (P), respiration rate (R), rectal temperature (RT), blood lactate and serum CPK activity. Logarithmic activity of serum CPK was found to decrease: In early with increasing body weight (P < 0.05). Serum CPK affected by genotypes but not by castration, sex am.71 stress-susceptibility. It is suggested that serum ACTH right z.ft.er weaning and serum CPK activity at any growth stage should not be used as stress-index for individual screening. In pigs exposed to solar heat stress, significant multiple regressions of RT against ambient temperature (AT) and intervals :f exposure time were established. Based on these regressions, stress-susceptible (SS) and stress-resistant (SR) pigs were classified by tentative setting an RT of 41.7°C as the upper lame: which an SR pig may attain after 90 min. under a reference exposure condition where AT changes from 32.2°C to 42.2°C. Endocrine stress-susceptibility did not seem to be related to sex/ and castration. 1, RT at +30, +909 +150 min., post-exposure serum CPK were found to significantly increase from pre exposure of wellness respective parameters except blood lactate. Responses ES of FR pigs exposed to solar heat stress were not significantly different in all parameters measured except RT. The rise was significantly found in SR pigs effectively prevents the RT rise. This was clearly seen at + -30 min. RT of treated SS and untreated. Its effects were, not apparent heat stress became more severe. Dropranolol may be useful to manage when they are exposed different stressors except cold , common severe ass or halothane anesthesia. Hypothesis on the mechanism and predisposing factors leading :'ne sudden collapse of SS pigs exposed to stress and halothane z was discussed.
