Abstract: REVILLA, IRISH ANN R. Marinduque Pig Farmers' Knowledge on African Swine Fever and Behavior Towards Suspicion and Reporting.Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2022. Adviser. Melbourne Talactac, DVM, MS, PhD. African swine fever (ASF) is caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV), which can cause significant morbidity and mortality events in pigs. On October 29, 2021, first case of ASF was confirmed in the province of Marinduque making it the 50th province to be affected with the disease. The ability to control the potential extent of outbreaks requires early detection of the ASF virus's entry. However, how familiar pig farmers are with the clinical indications and their motivation to report the disease play a big role in prompt and correct reporting of ASF primary cases. On March and April 2022, an online questionnaire was distributed to assess Marinduque pig farmers' knowledge and behavior regarding ASF clinical suspicion and reporting. Also, the study assessed the farmers’ awareness to the national crop insurance and assistance from the government. Descriptive Analysis was used for the farmers demographics, farm characteristics, and farmers awareness on their benefits and assistance from the government. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors statistically associated with farmers' ASF suspicion and reporting behavior. With 272 pig farmer respondents, the survey revealed that Marinduque pig farmers are aware of the general knowledge of ASF (cause, sign, transmission, whether there is vaccination or not, and whether it is zoonotic or not), but their knowledge is still limited and insufficient to make a good judgment in times of suspicion. Pig farmers would also seek advice from local authorities and suspect ASF if ASF-like clinical indications (with high mortality) were observed on their farm. Farmers who were unsure about the signs of ASF were statistically strongly connected with this behavior. According to the study, farmers would delay reporting for a few days to avoid making a false report. Reporting of ASF was significantly more likely among farmers who consider that if they do not report it immediately it would have a negative image on their farm; those who think that if not reported immediately it would damage their reputation and relationships with other farmers, vets, or third parties; and those who believe that they need to report immediately believes that it would affect their ability to sell pigs in the future. Marinduque pig farmers awareness on the national government insurance made for them is not yet known by many unlike with their awareness on the assistance coming from the provincial government.
