Summary: "The assessment of air quality is usually based on monitoring data. Regular, continuous measurement are mandatory in most countries for ambient air quality, but also of emissions from major sources such as power plants above a certain size threshold, e.o., 50 MW. Monitoring, however, is not a viable approach if we want to evaluate the impacts of a source that is not yet in operation, like the incinerator for which we wish to find a feasible location: this requires a forecasing method like simulation modelling. Air quality management requires an understanding of the type of air pollutants being emitted by various sources from onroad vehicles, large industrial facilities, power plants and smaller sources such as residential heating and asphalt paving. The development of emissions inventories is critical for the states to implement accurate and effective air pollution control strategies. Public awareness of environmental problems has led to the development of regulations in different countries. The rapid growth in the number of regulations to be satisfied by a company requires us to have an understanding of various acts passed by legislators. The decision making in global economy forces us to take into account major regulatory programmes, enforcement strategies and the possibility of policy changes. A look at the history of environmental regulations reveals that there were water pollution laws on the books even before air pollution regulations came into existence. Water pollution problems are generally recognized by the public before they reach crisis proportions because it tends to be more noticeable. Air pollution was not regarded as a health and safety problem because the health problems show up over longer periods. The book also contains revised discussions on public policy concerns, with a focus on air quality standards for ozone depletion and global warming, and the health effects of particulate air pollutants."--Back cover
