Introduction -- Classification of Bacteriology -- Bacteria: Cell Walls -- Surface Structure of Bacillus -- Bacterial Genetics -- Bacterial Structure -- Veterinary Bacteriology.
Summary: "Bacteriology studies bacteria, their taxonomy, genetics, biochemistry, etc. Bacteria are classified according to the substances they produce the optimum temperature required for their growth and the nutrients required to sustain them. Bacteriology is a sub field of microbiology. The beginnings of bacteriology paralleled the development of the microscope. The first person to see microorganisms was probably the Dutch naturalist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, who in 1683 described some animalcules, as they were then called, in water, saliva, and other substances. These had been seen with a simple lens magnifying about 100-150 diameters. The organisms seem to correspond with some of the very large forms of bacteria as now recognized. Bacteria and Archaea are present in all environments that support life. They may be free-living, or living in associations with higher forms of lite (plants and animals), and they are found in environments that support no other form of life. Procaryotes have the usual nutritional requirements for growth of cells, but many of the ways that they utilize and transform their nutrients are unique. This bears directly on their habitat and their ecology. This book shall quench the thirst for knowledge of the students of biomedical sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, nursing physiotherapy, dental and other allied courses."--Back cover
