Abstract: ALCOVER, RACHELLE O. Self-Competence and Social Adjustment of Selected Graduating Elementary Pupils in Public and Private Schools in Dasmariñas City. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University. April 2011. Thesis Adviser: Ms. Louziela P. Masana. This study determined the self-competence and social adjustment of selected graduating elementary pupils in public and private schools in Dasmariñas City. Specifically, it aimed to (1) determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of the following: (a) age, (b) gender, (c) birth order, (d) number of siblings, (e) socio-economic status, and (f) type of school; (2) determine the level of self-competence of the respondents; (3) determine the level of social adjustment of the respondents; (4) determine if there is a significant difference on the level of self-competence and social adjustment between pupil-respondents from: (a) public school and (b) private school; (5) determine if there is a significant relationship between demographic profile and: (a) self -competence and (b) social adjustment, and (6) determine if there is a significant relationship between self-competence and social adjustment. Correlational-comparative research design was used in this study. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the group of respondents due to the subjects' availability. Three hundred respondents from public and private schools participated in the study. Based on the results, the respondents' levels of self-competence and social adjustment were high. It implies that pupils among public and private schools are competent enough in doing tasks. They are also well-adjusted individuals that can easily communicate with other people. Age, number of siblings, birth order, family income, and type of school have no significant relationship to the levels of self-competence and social adjustment of the selected graduating elementary pupils in public and private schools in Dasmariñas City. Overall, there is a significant relationship between self-competence and social adjustment of the respondents. It shows that pupils with high self-competence have an ability to perform in front of other people. Pupils can easily adjust if they are confident in themselves.
