Abstract: MIRANDA, MIKO ERIKO M., UDARBE, EMMANUELLE JOHN R., "PSYCHOSOCIAL PHYSIOLOGICAL VALE CRUZ, AFREL, RESPONSES OF MOTHERS TO INFANT MORTALITY IN THE PROVINCE OF CAVITE". Undergraduate Thesis, College of Nursing, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2011. Adviser: Professor Lenila A. De Vera. The main purpose of the study is to identify the psychosocial and physiologic responses of mothers to infant mortality in the province of Cavite. The specific objectives of the study are to 1) describe the demographic profile of the respondents 2) determine the psychosocial response of mothers to infant death in terms of mental and social and physiological. 3) show the relationship between these psychosocial and physiological responses and the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of a. age, b. civil status, c. economic status, d. educational attainment, and e. occupation. The statistical treatment was done by utilizing the chi-square method. Chi-square test of goodness-of fit was used since the researchers are interested in determining the number of mothers and their responses which fall in different categories for a single qualitative variable and in knowing if the sample under analysis was drawn or not from a population with some specified distribution or not. Cramer's V test was also utilized which served as a post- test to determine strengths of association between variables after Chi square has determined the significant relationship. The psychosocial response is divided into mental and social, wherein the mental aspect is further divided into four phases. The study revealed that under the mental phase, the mothers have experienced shock and pain, sense of guilt, were devastated and disbelief during the first phase. During the second phase, the majority of the mothers have experienced crying and profound sorrow, irritability, bitterness, and hostility. During the third phase they have experienced loneliness and despair. During the fourth and final phase of mental response, the mothers developed confidence, personal empowerment, a sense of personality identity and independence. On the other hand, mothers also experienced helplessness, ambivalent attachments, and hostility to others, were the social implications. In physiological responses, the mothers experienced insomnia, nightmares, decreased appetite, headaches, weight loss, palpitations, lack of energy/tiredness and tremors. On the other hand, lesser number of mothers felt other reactions which the researchers perceived to be detrimental to their health such as hypochondriasis, hallucination, illusions, alcohol or drug abuse, loss of interactions and lastly emotional numbness. There is a relationship between the respondents' demographic profile and frequency and duration in terms of occupation and Numbing and Denial (mental phase 1), the relationship between the variables is strong. There is a relationship between the respondents' demographic profile to frequency and duration in terms of occupation and Yearning and Searching (mental phase 2), the relationship between the variables is weak. There is a relationship between the respondents' demographic profile and the frequency and duration in terms of economic status and physiological responses; the relationship between the variables is strong.
