Abstract: PURIFICACION, YZEL L. Involvement of Parents to Conversational Activity and Phonological Skills of Pre-schoolers at Vicente P. Villanueva Memorial School. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Prof. Renato T. Agdalpen. The study was conducted at Vicente P. Villanueva Memorial School, Sampaloc I, City of Dasmarinas, Cavite, on January 2013. Specifically, this study attempts to (1)determine the extent of the involvement of parents to conversational activities with the children in terms of mealtime conversations, conversations during homework-making and conversations during recreational activities; (2)determine the level of the phonological skills of the children in terms of concept of a spoken word, syllables, rhymes and phonemes; (3)find the relationship between the involvement of parents to conversational activities and the phonological skills of the pre-school children. The study covered ninety-seven parents of pre-school children of Vicente P. Villanueva Memorial School, City of Dasmarinas, Cavite S.Y. 2012-2013. To know the extent of conversations with parents, evaluation scale was developed and validated to use in this study. A phonological awareness skills test was adopted to evaluate the respondent’s level of phonological skills. The findings revealed that awareness at the level of the phoneme and syllables has particular significance for the acquisition of reading because of its role in the development of the alphabetic principle - that the written word is simply a means of codifying the sound properties of the spoken word. Also, positive home environment (e.g. book exposure and parental teaching) was found to be significantly related to later reading ability.
