ENCARNACION, VIRGILIO DM. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, March 2000. Utilization Of Golden Kuhol (Pellucida angularis) Shell As Mineral Source In Quail Layer Rations. Adviser: Prof Teresita M. Labrador.
Ninety (90) ready to lay quails were used in the study. They were distributed to three treatments and replicated three times with 10 birds per replication using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) to determine the effect of golden kuhol shell and oyster shell on egg production in quails. Treatment I with 2% oyster shell served as control, Treatment II was given 1% oyster shell and 1% golden kuhol shell and Treatment III with 2% golden kuhol shell.
Insignificant differences (P > 0.05) were observed in weekly body weight, weekly feed consumption and feed conversion efficiency of the birds. Likewise, eggs in all treatments were similar (P>0.05) in weight and shell thickness. However, birds given 2% golden kuhol shell laid more eggs (P > 0.05) with slightly thicker egg shell than the groups given a combination of oyster shell and golden kuhol shell and 2% oyster shell. Quails in all treatments simultaneously laid eggs a day after their arrival.
Quails given 2% golden kuhol shell produced eggs with dark smooth and shiny egg shell. They also exhibited little advantage in terms of breakage. There was no mortality among experimental birds.
