Summary: "Plant tissue culture has become popular among horticulturists, plant breeders and industrialists because of its varied practical applications. It is also being applied to study basic aspects of plant growth and development. The discovery of the first cytokinin (kinetin) is based on plant tissue culture research. Today, biotechnology is being used as a tool to give plants new traits that benefit agricultural production, the environment, and human nutrition and health. The purpose of this publication is to provide basic information about plant biotechnology and to give examples of its uses. The goal of plant breeding is to combine desirable traits from different varieties of plants to produce plants of superior quality. This approach to improving crop production has been very successful over the years. For example, it would be beneficial to cross a tomato plant that bears sweeter fruit with one that exhibits increased disease resistance. To do this, it takes many years of crossing and backcrossing generations of plants to obtain the desired trait. This book covers all important aspects of practical utility in field of genetic manipulation by tissue culture methods, protoplast technology and gene transfer methods for providing the students simple and reproducible protocols so that the practical utility in different areas of biotechnology should be fulfilled."--Back cover
