Summary: "Financial economics is a branch of economics that analyzes the use and distribution of resources in markets in which decisions are made under uncertainty. Financial decisions must often take into account future events, whether those be related to individual stocks, portfolios or the market as a whole. Making financial decisions is not always a straight-forward process. Time, risk (uncertainty), opportunity costs, and information can create incentives or disincentives. Financial economics employs economic theory to evaluate how certain things impact decision making, providing investors with the instruments to make the right calls. The process of globalisation has enlarged economic actors' choices and opportunities. This applies particularly to financial firms, whose ability to diversify their portfolios has improved considerably. Some have even strengthened their ascendancy over specific markets, frequently by means of alliances, joint-venture strategies, acquisitions or mergers. Indeed, with the liberalisation of financial markets, financial intermediaries have been able to extend the spectrum and reach of their activities. The subject is concerned with "the allocation and deployment of economic resources, both spatially and across time, in an uncertain environment". It therefore centers on decision making under uncertainty in the context of the financial markets, and the resultant economic and financial models and principles, and is concerned with deriving testable or policy Implications from acceptable assumptions. This book attempts to understand the multiple branches that fall under the discipline of financial economics and how such concepts have practical applications."--Back cover
