Abstract: MENDOZA, AARON RAY BATHAN, "THE EFFICACY OF SINGLE AND DOUBLE INJECTION OF 88% ACETIC ACID AS CASTRATING AGENT IN SEXUALLY MATURE SPRAGUE- DAWLEY RATS (Rattus norvegicus)." Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Indang, Cavite, May 2004. Adviser: Eugene M. Principe, DVM. The study evaluated the efficacy of single and double injection of 88% acetic acid as castrating agent in sexually mature sprague-dawley rats. The study used forty-five sexually mature male rats that were randomly divided into 3 groups: control, treatment 1, and treatment II. Testicular weight, diameter and number of spermatogonia was significantly higher in the control (p<0.05) and was not significantly different between treatment I and treatment II (p>0.05). Histologically, surgically excised testicle in the control group showed normal testicles with typical architecture and viable cells. Excised testicles from treatment I and II showed massive necrosis of cells in the seminiferous tubules at day 7. A few viable cells were observed in some seminiferous tubules in treatment I. In both treatments at day 14 and 21 the result obtained were almost similar, the excised tissue showed severe necrosis of cells in the seminiferous tubules. Most of the excised organ showed tissue resembling the epididymis upon histological examination suggesting the complete resorption of the testicles and sterility of rats. In conclusion, result of the study showed that single and double injection of 0.1 ml 88% acetic acid was effective in castrating sexually mature rats.
