Abstract: BUELO, ROBBIE JAN VINCENT T. Ethno Communication of Asian Candidates in the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant: A Content Analysis. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2013. Adviser: Mrs. Lisette D. Mendoza. The study was conducted in order to analyze the questions and answers of Asian finalists of Miss Universe beauty pageant in the interview portion through the evaluation of ethno communication. Questions and answers of Asian finalists in past interview portions of Miss Universe beauty pageant from 1952 to 2012 were used in gathering the data. From the 49 Asian finalists, 27 were analyzed since they are the only ones who had undergone the final interview portion. The study was a content analySis which analyzed the questions and answers of Asian Miss Universe finalists. Profile of the finalists, questions raised and answer given during the final interview were summarized on a content analysis form for the evaluation phase. The questions raised were classified into either cliche, a type of question which is commonly used in the pageant or has already been used in the past pageants or taken from different sayings, or intelligently-crafted, a kind of question which is well-thought and will provide room for honest expression of the candidate’s self. The answers were also classified whether they are based on experience, profession, rehearsed answer, social issues, upbringing or values. The classification of answers was also done using the aid of books, interview from past pageants and news programs. The results were then summarized and compared according to countries represented, type of question raised, basis/es used in the answer and decade competed. Candidates are mostly 18, 19, 20 and 24 years old because they should qualify with the age requirement of national pageants which is patterned with the requirements of Miss Universe. Finalists were often professional models or aspiring models who want to work in the fashion industry. Meanwhile, cliché question, one that has already been used in the past pageant or taken from different sayings, is the most common type of question used in pageants. From the videos of their interview portion, 25 questions and 27 answers from the finalists were gathered. Since there were six bases that can be used by the candidates, there were difl‘erent options with which the candidates could answer the question. There were candidates who answered with only one specific basis, which candidates who used multiple bases just combined the different possible bases in answering in the final portion. Considering the results of the study, women, especially beauty queen, may study more on the cultural background of people. This is more applicable especially when competing in a pageant. Students may have an overview in the study of culture, especially for ethno communication, which is a new field. The field of communication, especially for news and other programs may avoid discrimination since they now know the reason why candidates are answering a certain a question. The future researchers may expound the scope of the study, gather better profiles of the finalists and produce a better history of the pageant.
