Abstract: LIM, ATHENA BERNICE J., MOJICA, CHARINA B. Grandparenting and Social-Emotional Behavior of Alfonso National High School Students in Alfonso, Cavite. Research Study. (Genereal Science Curriculum) Science High School, College of Education, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2010. Adviser: Dr. Liza C. Costa. This study generally aimed to determine the relationship of grandparenting and the social-emotional behavior of students at Alfonso National High School during the year 2009 - 2010. Specifically, this study aimed to determine the parenting styles of solo grandparents; determine the parenting styles of grandparents living with the parents of the children; identify the social-emotional behaviors of children living with solo grandparents; identify the social-emotional behaviors of children living with their grandparents and parents; determine the differences in the parenting styles between solo grandparents and grandparents living with the parents of the children; determine the differences in the social-emotional behaviors of children under the care of solo grandparents and grandparents living with the parents of the children; and determine the relationship of grandparenting styles and social-emotional behavior of children. The respondents in this study were high school students of Alfonso National High School in the school year 2009-2010. Their grandparents also served as respondents. A social-emotional behavior checklist was used by the researchers to determine the social-emotional behavior of students and a parenting style quiz was used to determine the grandparenting style of the grandparents. Purposive sampling was used to select the appropriate respondents needed in this study. Frequency count and percentage were used to describe the grandparenting status, style and social-emotional behavior of the students. Chi-square test was used to determine the difference between the grandparenting styles of solo grandparents and grandparents living with the parents of the children; and to determine the relationship that existed between grandparenting styles and social-emotional behavior of children. T-test was used to determine the differences in the social-emotional behavior of students taken cared of by solo grandparents and grandparents living with the parents of the children. The findings showed that more than half of the solo grandparents and grandparents living with the parents of the children were using authoritative (active/democratic) style. With respect to the social-emotional behavior of students, it was found out that majority of the respondents have a positive social-emotional behavior, whether they were taken cared of by solo grandparents and grandparents together with the parents. There are also no significant differences in the social-emotional behavior of students and in the grandparenting styles. It was found out that grandparenting style is not significantly related to the social- emotional behavior of children.
