Abstract: BANTILAN, ANGELA ZENY L. Gender, Problem-Solving Methods and Posttraumatic Resilience of Selected Distressed Individuals in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science Major in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2010. Adviser: Ms. Alma Fatima R. Reyes. This study analyzed the gender, problem-solving methods and posttraumatic resilience of selected distressed individuals in Cavite. Specifically, this study sought to: 1) determine the gender of the respondents; 2) determine the problem-solving method used by the respondents when grouped according to gender in terms of positive problem orientation, rational problem solving, negative problem solving orientation, impulsivity/carelessness style and avoidance style; 3) determine the factor/s of posttraumatic resilience established and developed to the respondents grouped according to gender as a result of their crisis in terms of relating to others, new possibilities, personal strength, spiritual change and appreciation of life; 4) determine the relationship between: gender and problem-solving method, and gender and posttraumatic resilience; and 5) determine the significant difference between male and female respondents in terms of problem-solving methods and posttraumatic resilience. Purposive Sampling Technique was used in this study. Post Traumatic Growth Inventory by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996) and Social Problem Solving Inventory-Revised by D'Zurilla et al. (2002) were used to assess the problem solving method and posttraumatic resilience of the 115 respondents of this study. Result of this study revealed that most of the respondents were female which further implies that women are prone to distress than men. Data showed that with regards to the problem-solving method used by the respondents, males were using positive problem orientation while females used a combination of rational problem solving and positive problem orientation in facing their life problems. Furthermore, male and female respondents experienced spiritual change as a result of their life crisis. Correlation results of this study showed that gender has a significant relationship to problem-solving methods as well as to posttraumatic resilience. For the test of difference, findings revealed that there is no significant difference in the problem-solving methods of male and female, as well as in posttraumatic resilience.
