Abstract: LAURELES, SHIRLEY CRIZALDO. Beef Cattle Raising in Upland and Lowland Areas of Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Animal Science. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2002. Adviser: Dr. Jacinto M. Constante. A survey was conducted in selected Barangays of Silang, Tagaytay, Alfonso, Indang, Naic, Tanza, Imus and Dasmarinas, Cavite to compare the management practices employed by the farmers in the surveyed areas. Selected randomly, 80 farmer-residents were interviewed with ages ranging from 13 to 62 years old with 1 to 4 years and above of experience. Most of the farmers own their cattle with a usual number of 1 to 5 heads. The main reason of raising cattle was for beef production. They fed their animals with pure soilage but still some used feed supplement. Only few used pen for housing. Most tethered their animal in the pasture area. The common breeds of cattle being raised were Native, Brahman and Meztizo, which they usually acquired around the neighborhood. Phymeral fever and colds/cough were the most common diseases encountered by the farmer. Sponge bathing cattle with vinegar/gasoline was the most common treatment for their diseases. Only few consulted a veterinarian and practiced vaccination. Too much heat affects their cattle that is why they are kept in a shady area whenever temperature is too high. Ocular assessment was used by the middlemen to estimate weight because they were the most common buyers.
