Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2012. Adviser: Prof. Nenita B. Panaligan, RN, MAN This study was conducted to understand the agony of a separated wife. Specifically, this study aimed to: discuss the underlying reasons of separation; narrate the marriage-related experiences undergone by the separated wife before, during, and after the separation; explore the coping mechanisms used by the separated wife before, during, and after the separation as well, and to explore the type of marriage separation encountered by the separated wife. This study was conducted in different areas in Cavite, particularly in selected barangays in Amadeo, and Carmona. Those places were chosen by the researchers, wherein they have observed vast numbers of separated couples. Then, To identify the target population, snow ball non-ramdom sampling was utilized, wherein it’s the easiest way to locate the target subject participants. Snowball sampling is the way of suggesting subjects or refer others who meet the researcher’s eligible criteria. Then, after the snowball sampling, simple random sampling was utilized through the lottery method, which was done in order to give the participant equal chances to be chosen. The researchers used a sample population of six legally married separated wives, which was comprising of four participants from Amadeo, Cavite, and two participants from Carmona, Cavite. The researchers got a total population of 12, and only a sample of six participants was utilized for this study. Questionnaires were provided for every participants to fill up and answer. It was divided into two parts sections. The first part focused on the personal information of the participant. The second part involved the four key questions or sample questions that the participants can answer or merely just read the questions, in order for them to gain knowledge about the questions to be asked in the semi structured interview, which was to be conducted later. The mean age of the separated wives was 48 years, all were legally married, and majority (n=4) got married at their teenage years ranges from 17-19 years old. All of them (n=6) qualified to be a participant because they reached a minimum of five years of being married before they got separated from their husbands, and majority (n=4) experienced married life that ranges from 18 to 20 years, before their relationship end up into a legal or not legal separation. Majority (n=5) were not legally separated; one was a written agreement, and four were abandoned. And only one was legally separated through an annulment. The sample was representative of the original sample in terms of age, age they got married, and the number of years they were married before they got separated, and the type of their marriage separation. The interviews showed that in general, a marriage between a husband and wife would greatly end up into a separation most commonly caused by the marital affair of the separated wives’ husbands to another woman, and misunderstandings between them. All of them claimed that their husband has another woman, and there was always the misunderstandings or poor communication between them, which goes more serious each time they had fights towards each other. Some can resolved their problems easily, but experienced to have misunderstanding almost everyday. Majority of them took it for so long before they totally recovered. And all (n=6) of them was very happy in their lives today being a single parent or a single mother. The themes discovered were misunderstanding and extramarital affairs, good and bad experiences of married life, absence of interaction or communication, does not matters, a long time of healing process, a job well done, ask help and guidance from God: God is their strength, Being a single parent indeed: enjoying my life today and busy with my business, and abandonment is the most common of marriage separation. Each theme comprises the reason of marriage separation, the marriage-related experiences before, during, and after the separation, the coping mechanisms used before, during, and after the separation, and the type of marriage separation each separated wives have encountered.
