Abstract: CATALUNA, AILEEN M. and ARBIE ROY O. RAMIREZ. An Analysis of the Lead Female Characters' Traits in Amy Tan's Novel and Wayne Wang's Film: The Joy Luck Club, Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, Major in Journalism, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2005, Adviser: Ms. Bettina Joyce Ilagan. The study was conducted at Cavite State University Indang, Cavite from December 2004 to February 2005. Generally, this study aimed to determine the traits of . the lead female characters of the novel and film "The Joy Luck Club". Lam Mulvey's Feminist Theory and the Feminist theory was used to guide the researchers in their study. A copy of the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan (1989) was read three times and the film The Joy Luck Club directed by Wayne Wang (1993), was viewed three times to identify the differences and similarities of the major characters between the novella and the film. The Internet was used to look for additional pieces of information. The study found out that there are 15 mentioned motherly traits in the novel, these are: mysterious, protective, superstitious, strict, loving, religious, believes and follows Chinese proverbs, sarcastic, complains to everything, humble. Boastful, proud to her daughters, sentimental, encouraging mother and hopeful; while in the film, there are 10 mentioned trait. These are: strict, boastful, hopeful, loving, encouraging, proud to her daughter, humble, sentimental, complains to everything and sarcastic. In the daughters, there are 12 traits that are identified in the novel, these are: obedient, passive, imaginative, sentimental, obsessed with revenge, dependent, arrogant, respectful, answers back on her mother, intelligent, kind and low self-esteem, while there are 4 identified traits in the film, these are: obedient, low self-esteem, intelligent and arrogant. The Philippine cinema should create more family oriented movies similar to The Joy Luck Club to be able to show the importance of the family in our society. Novelist should produce more educational and family based stories that can be made into films in the future. The society should watch foreign films to be able to understand different cultures in the world. The family should treat each other with respect because the researchers believed that the family is the foundation of our society.
