Abstract: RUBIA, ANTHONY L. Internet Usage of College Students in Selected Towns of Cavite . Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Marketing. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. April 2006. Adviser: Mrs. Ma. Corazon A. Buena. A study was conducted to determine the Internet usage of college students in selected towns of Cavite. Specifically, the study aimed to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of college students in selected towns of Cavite who are Internet users, determine the Internet usage characteristics of college students in selected towns of Cavite, and determine the level of expense for Internet services of college students in selected towns of Cavite. One hundred respondents were selected by means of accidental sampling. Data were collected with use of the prepared interview schedule. The data were analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency count, percentage, mean, range and rank. Findings of the study revealed that the place where college students go online most often was from computer shops which explained the prevalence of computer shops in areas near the schools. Going online was part of the students' weekly activities. They usually access the Internet 1 to 2 times a week which made them experienced and well versed with regards to the use of the Internet. They were also familiar with the use of wireless devices when they go online. The most common wireless device they used online was cell phone. Online chatting, sending or receiving text messages to a cell phone, sending or reading email were the usual activities done by the college students. Further, the most frequent school-related use of the Internet by students was for school research which suggests that many of the researches submitted by the students in their respective schools came from the Internet. The most frequently visited websites by college students were: yahoo.com, google.com and friendster.com. The level of expense incurred by students at home was generally higher than the level of expense they incurred outside their homes. The reason why accessing the Internet at home was more costly than outside home is because it is more convenient to access the Internet at home which induce students to spend more hours in the Internet. The top five activities identified by college students which had high costs were: online chatting, seeking information related to categories to do schoolwork, research, and related school activities, sending or reading email, sending or receiving text messages using a cell phone and playing online games.
