A study on raising fattening cattle was conducted to determine the different management practices followed by the respondents at Balakilong, Laurel, Batangas from May 1978 to September 1978. Prepared questionnaires and personal interviews were used in gathering the data.
The survey showed that all the ten respondents interviewed had ten to thirty-five years experience in raising fattening cattle.
The farmers were engaged in backyard production and each were raising two to seven heads of breeds of brahman, Australian, Hereford, and Indu-Brazil. Natural breeding was employed by the respondents. Bulls were used for breeding and heifers were bred at the age of 2 to 2 ½ years. Selection of breeding stock was practiced based on the quality of the animals.
Ipil-ipil, rice straw and other forage crops available in the farm were used as feeds for the animals. Supplements such as salt and molasses and sometimes corn grits were provided.
Periodic vaccination was not followed by the respondents. Control of external parasites was done using locally available preventive materials.
