Abstract: BOBADILLA, ANGELI G. and MADRID, CLAIRE A. Characterization of Chemical Constituents of protective covering of Hemispherical Scale (Saissetia coffaea walker). Research Study. Science High School, Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. April 2007. Adviser. Dr. Teddy Tepora. This study entitled "Characterization of Chemical Constituents of Protective Covering of Hemispherical Scale (Saissetia coffaea walker) " was conducted at the Department of Physical Science Instrumentation Room, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite from September to February 2007. This study was conducted to determine the physical properties and the chemical properties present in Hemispherical Scale . A total of 1 kg. of scraped Hemispherical scale was used in this experiment. The collected sample was macerated for three days then subjected to mechanical blender using ethanol as solvent. Concentration of the sample was done by using evaporation method. Extracted Hemispherical Scale was dark. brown color and produced a very strong odor which is disagreeable, and the texture was. coarse. It was found soluble in water and methanol. In chemical test, the following results were obtained: On chromic acid test (test for alcohol), the color of the sample was changed to green after 5 minutes and 7 seconds. which indicates that it is a secondary alcohol since the change in color was slow. In chemistry the change in color in chromic acid test is green. It is said that when the color. was changed immediately, it is a primary alcohol and if it is slow, it is a secondary alcohol. In hydrolysis reaction (test for amines), the sample was found basic since the red.
